Powerflushing
(for sludge removal from affected systems):
We use a powerflushing machine and desludging chemicals to help shift partial blockages. Sludge is a word used in the trade to describe Magnetite, a black residue when your central heating system has been run without inhibitor in the water. The more refills of raw cold water your system has been given, the worse the build up of magnetite will be.

Symptoms of sludge include;
- Radiators cold at the bottom but warm at the top
- Pump noise and failure
- Radiator thermostatic valves getting stuck in the off position
- Certain radiators not working
- Banging noise from the boiler
- Combi: boilers: lack of HW performance, diverter valves gives regular trouble
- Boiler cuts out regularly requiring 'reset'
Installing a new boiler on a radiator system affected by sludge is plain stupidity - it is like buying a new car and filling it with oil from an old tractor.

The lifespan warranty of the new boiler will be affected. Some installers will tell you that a quick hose through with mains pressure tap water will move the sludge and be adequate preparation for a replacement boiler. This is purely plumber-speak for "I don't want to invest £1000 in a Powerflush machine, I didn't spend as much on that as my van."

HWCH will not install a replacement boiler without conducting a Powerflush. We will do the job properly, or not at all.
