Barn conversion near Tonbridge, Kent

Here we find ourselves down a rural unmarked lane in Kent, the site of a large barn conversion. It comprises a two storey hallway, and many original features. Much of the house is already underfloor heated, using an L&K system with around 14 separately controlled zones. What makes this system unusual is the various heat sources used to create the heating and hot water. There’s two fuel burning stoves, some solar thermal on the rooftop, and a Rayburn solid fuel stove. This was all installed by the present owners, who were almost singlehandedly responsible for the design and execution around […]
Remove Ideal iStor boiler and fit super new Viessmann and Fabdec system

We’ve published a similar story here before, which is one of the reasons why our customer in this case study called us. He recently bought a relatively new property (2011) with an Ideal iStor on the second floor, it wasn’t working properly, and he had been advised that it had been a money pit since virtually day one. The other reason he got in contact with Hot Water & Central Heating Ltd was that he had used us for boiler installation before, in this case around 11 years ago (not in this house!). A refreshing number of our early customers […]
William Pitt the Younger’s house

The focus of our case study is a listed building in Westerham, Kent, which was once the residence of William Pitt the younger. Westerham is a small town steeped in history, and features Chartwell, home of Winston Churchill, Downe House, home to Charles Darwin, and Squerryes Court. Chevening, the deputy prime minister’s estate, is just down the road. Featuring timbers that are believed to date back to the 13th century, in more recent times William Pitts’ former house has been an upmarket restaurant, and an Indian fine dining eaterie. The present owners purchased the property in a state of dilapidation, […]
Multiple showers now possible!
Mains pressure hot and cold water systems are great, but only if there is enough water. If you don’t get enough water from your water main, running one outlet tends to stop another from working, which is rather irritating. Mains pressure systems are those connected to combination boilers, unvented cylinders (some call these ‘Megaflow’) and heatstores. Our customer today has a Boilermate III, which is a Gledhill manufactured unit commonly found in newer houses built in the 1990-2009 era. It uses a heatstore principle; this is a large vat of permanently heated water from the boiler, which is used as […]
DPS Heatstore solves loft conversion challenge
The house pictured, located in Croydon, Surrey UK, was being extended into the loft space. The loft tanks for the hot water system and radiator header tanks had to be removed to make way for the new accommodation. Our challenge was to provide a new heating and high pressure cold & hot water system in an 1900mm high cellar, which could replicate the shower performance of the existing powerful pumped tank fed system in the loft. Furthermore, it should support the use of extra bathrooms in the loft area. This project raised a number of challenging problems. We could have […]
