Navien Oil Boiler Cascade replaces Biomass plant

For this case study, we are on a 660 acre farm on the Surrey/Kent borders, comprising a number of industrial units, home and other uses, where once 6000 pigs used to roam. The owners of the farm complex were influential with some of the first biomass developments, and while advising other users over 20 years ago, they fitted a plant in their farm industrial area. Their Farm2000 biomass plant used timber and other waste, and was connected to a large underground steel pipework distribution system. Heat on the lucky units and houses connected to the system was unmetered, and it […]

Fabdec unvented cylinder, cows, – and mother in laws – in Minehead

In our industry, there are few genuine innovations.  When you look behind the hype, very little is new. The unvented mains pressure hot water cylinder existed for years on the continent, but in the UK it has only been permitted for domestic applications since 1986!  This is because storing significant quantities of pressurised hot water brings certain risks, the one people get excited about being explosion. Unvented cylinders deliver mains direct hot and cold services to all outlets in the house, dispensing with the need for a water tank in the loft.  They are typically the next stage up in […]

William Pitt the Younger’s house

The focus of our case study is a listed building in Westerham, Kent, which was once the residence of William Pitt the younger. Westerham is a small town steeped in history, and features Chartwell, home of Winston Churchill, Downe House, home to Charles Darwin, and Squerryes Court.  Chevening, the deputy prime minister’s estate, is just down the road. Featuring timbers that are believed to date back to the 13th century, in more recent times William Pitts’ former house has been an upmarket restaurant, and an Indian fine dining eaterie. The present owners purchased the property in a state of dilapidation, […]

Complex house heating system of the future (in 1998) gets updated

For this case study, we are in Ealing, West London. Our customer rang us to say he had inadvertently bought a large house with a woefully complex heating system around 8 years ago.  The first time he viewed the house, it was perfect – but they never went into the garage.  On the second visit, he popped his head into the garage area, and found it completely full of commercial plant, and a ambient temperature of over 30C. Since then, many a central heating specialist has escaped having seen the garage;  apparently they are brimming with confidence until the door […]

The Full Monty

Our customer in Warlingham, Surrey, UK was having a substantial extension to the side and rear of the property. We were asked to specify a replacement for the existing Lennox warm air system, using a mixture of radiators and underfloor heating. Numerous bathrooms in the house and a new annexe were to be converted to mains pressure hot and cold water systems. We designed a four zone heating system, for maximum energy efficiency.  An unvented hot water system augmented by a TWS water boosting accumulator supplied the bathrooms.  A Worcester 30CDi boiler provided the engine room function. At the customer’s […]

Unusual house in Reigate, Surrey, gets unique underfloor heating

This property had an old HarcoPak, which is an integrated hot water cylinder and cold water storage tank, mounted in a frame on the 1st floor. It was heated by an old Potterton Kingfisher 100BF floorstanding boiler, which had been installed with a flue a couple of inches from the rear door and an undersized gas pipe;  both of which were contrary to the gas regs at the time the house was constructed, and still are. We removed the Potty boiler, leaving a large hole for the on site building team of Mizon Builders to brick up. We relocated the […]

Underfloor heating in barn, new external oil boiler, and hot water upgrade in Limpsfield

Limpsfield is a village on the outskirts of Oxted, Surrey (UK). Our customer already has a ‘Hot Water & Central Heating’ installed oil fired cooker range (see our Heritage cooker page above), and was building an outside barn further down the garden. The central heating boiler was an old oil fired unit, which was located in the hallway and could be heard throughout the property. Our customer wanted a new boiler and also wished to convert the water system to a new unvented type. Hot Water & Central Heating suggested that a Grant 3646 outdoor module was fitted, this is […]

Heritage Cooker, Vaillant 937 combi and underfloor heating

Our client has a woodworking business and was constructing an imaginative barn type conversion for their property, with lots of oak beams in an unusual semi circular design. Firstly, we installed a Heritage Cooker in the existing kitchen.  Fitted with brass trim and a Jade Green enamelled finish, it was also specified with body colour hotplate covers. This particular Heritage Cooker was a gas fired unit, most of the Heritages we fit are oil fired in very rural locations. In common with all 3 oven Heritage units, the control panel concealed behind the upper left hand door enables the unit […]

Large Viessmann and underfloor heating in Woldingham

This customer was having a large extension fitted on the rear of the property, in the form of a wooden Amdega conservatory. We suggested that water based underfloor heating would be far cheaper to run, and more effective than the electric matting recommended by the conservatory builder. The old 50Kw Potterton commercial boiler was removed and replaced with a top quality Viessmann 300 49Kw system boiler with KM bus varispeed pump. The house suffered from inadequate heating in the triple aspect bedroom and lounge, and also the large number of rooms meant that heat was being wasted during the day when […]

New Build in Purley.

Our client, Farnrise Construction, were building a new 5 bedroom house in Coulsdon. HWCH specified and installed a full ground floor underfloor heating system, Vaillant 624 system boiler and a manifolded upstairs radiator system.  This allowed the radiators to be fed by seamless pipework, making leaks under the beam and block floor almost impossible. Each floor will be independently controlled as well as each separate underfloor zone.  Hot water will be provided by a Vaillant uniSTOR unvented cylinder. The property will be completed in late 2008.
