Large Church installation; 3 plus 1 boilers
Earlier this year we were invited to provide a costed design solution for a new boiler plant at St Johns Church, Tunbridge Wells. A large, Grade II listed building, probably the largest church in the area, it comprises an enormous high ceiling worship space, with the addition of vestry and offices. The church building management team knew pretty much what they wanted to achieve, helped by their professional engineering roles in the electrical power industry. We found a cascaded set of three commercial 50Kw cast iron Ideal atmospheric boilers. The Church technical team had previously fitted a BMS (Building Management […]
Kensington large house boiler renewal in lockdown
This installation started as a phone enquiry relating to a house in the Kensington area of London in early 2021. The story, relayed by owner’s son in law, was that his parents had a light commercial boiler that had failed some months earlier, and they had found it difficult locating a contractor prepared to consider utilising the existing chimney for a new boiler. As we are based in Kent, Kensington is a bit of a schlep to drive for a quotation. We have done a fair bit of work in Kensington during 2020, much of it that would make really […]
Viessmann Cascade in large house
For our case study today, we were called to inspect a large house in Surrey, completely refurbished around 7 years ago, with multiple underfloor and radiator heating zones. The house had a basement boiler room, containing a pair of 46Kw Vaillant EcoTec 46Kw light commercial boilers, using a cascaded flue system and a header. A maintenance company had paid a number of visits to keep the boilers running, but they were plagued with frequent reliability problems. The last inspection had also raised issues with the flue header and chimney lining installation, even though they had been maintaining it for years […]
Grade II listed building condensing boiler using chimney
Today we are in a house in a beautiful part of the Garden of England, in other words, Kent. The house is in a small village reminiscent of the one filmed many years ago for a Hovis advert, with cobbled streets and high pavements. Our customer had bought a house with an old Potterton Osprey light commercial in the cellar, and British Gas had said that many parts were no longer available. Other contractors had suggested the only options involved siting a new boiler on an external wall; this would have resulted in lots of unwanted visible pipework but also […]
Remove Ideal iStor boiler and fit super new Viessmann and Fabdec system
We’ve published a similar story here before, which is one of the reasons why our customer in this case study called us. He recently bought a relatively new property (2011) with an Ideal iStor on the second floor, it wasn’t working properly, and he had been advised that it had been a money pit since virtually day one. The other reason he got in contact with Hot Water & Central Heating Ltd was that he had used us for boiler installation before, in this case around 11 years ago (not in this house!). A refreshing number of our early customers […]
Viessmann light commercial in Edenbridge
Pyser Optics are a long established company in Edenbridge, specialising in equipment for broadcasting and defence markets across the World. In fact, in a previous job, I used to order Broadcast TV camera lenses from them! Small world, they say. We were asked to specify a replacement for a 96Kw output SIME cast iron sectional boiler, which had been classed as unsafe. It was used to heat the main administration block of Pyser. Our heat calculations suggested that an 80Kw boiler would be more than adequate. We provided Pyser Optics Ltd with two options; a cheaper solution using a mainstream […]
Commercial boiler Design and Installation at premier Surrey Golf Club
Tandridge Golf Club was designed by the renowned Harry Colt in 1924, and today is judged as one of the top 100 golf courses in the UK. Situated in a rural location near Oxted, in Surrey (UK), it has a thriving membership and is a beautiful course; the main club buildings date from 1928 and have been carefully retained to the present day (unfortunately the first clubhouse burnt down in 1927, exacerbated by the thatched roof). It is popular every day, with golfers seemingly happy to battle in all weathers at all times of the year, perhaps encouraged by the excellent dining […]
Viessmann Boiler upgrade and Honeywell EvoHome
Today we are removing a 12 year old Keston condensing gas boiler (don’t see many lasting that long!) and replacing it with a Viessmann WB1B 19Kw compact boiler. Our customer lives in Redhill, Surrey, and is what you would call an early adopter, as he understand technology and the benefits it can bring. He fitted a Trisave condensing boiler in the mid 80’s, then the Keston and now wanted a well made reliable boiler. Enter the Viessmann! He can’t believe how quiet the Viessmann is! We are also changing all the controls, fitting a few new radiators, and fitting […]
New Viessmann heat-only in Edenbridge, Kent
Our client lives in our base town of Edenbridge, Kent, UK. The old boiler, a Potterton Netaheat, was in a fragile state, so we recommended replacing it with a Viessmann 100 Compact. It’s a Compact because it will fit inside a typical wall cupboard. This boiler is Viessmann’s latest small domestic boiler, called a WB1B, and is very well made amongst the competition. Featuring a heavyweight unique stainless steel heat exchanger, with an aluminium front burner plate, this is one boiler which looks like you might get 15 years out of it. It is simple, but ruggedly constructed. We’d fit […]
Condensing boiler using old chimney stack
This is another installation example of a situation where it is requested that we fit a new high efficiency boiler to an old chimney stack. We are in the town of Sevenoaks, Kent (UK) where there is a 35 year old floor standing Potterton boiler in the breakfast room, using a flue passing inside a brick chimney. We specified a Viessmann Compact WB1B 26Kw unit, with a sealed system chimney liner. This allowed us to install a room-sealed boiler using the stack for exhaust and fresh air inlet. We removed the old boiler, rationalised the pipework. The customer then had […]
