Worcester-Bosch 1 Keston 0

For this case study, we find ourselves in Oxted, Surrey. We like Oxted, because it is a lovely, virtually unspoilt town (if you exclude Morrisons) full of coffee shops and yummy mummies. I suppose it is similar to Sevenoaks with all the good bits squeezed into a smaller area. It is also very close to Hot Water & Central Heating Ltd HQ, so we get a lot of projects there. A larger house, this had a Keston C55 boiler and a significant number of radiators. The Keston boiler had been unreliable (no surprises there) so we suggested a Worcester-Bosch alternative. […]

A new Worcester Danesmoor, MultiCalor Warm Air, Radiators, Water pressure boosting…..

Today we are in a rural property in the Edenbridge/Tonbridge area of Kent. Our customer has recently moved back to the UK from working abroad. He has bought a detached house in the middle of the Kent countryside. The subject of an extensive makeover in the last 20 years, this property had a Lennox oil fired warm air unit in the cellar, a Worcester standard efficiency boiler in the external cupboard, and a conventional hot water system. The warm air system was around 20 years old, and covered the two reception rooms , kitchen and hall areas. It was very […]
Golf Club gets new boiler plant for showers

We are in Oxted, Surrey, UK at the picturesque Tandridge Golf Club. Having put in a new Worcester Bosch boiler system and Evohome at the home of one of the management team, they were sufficiently impressed to ask were we could have a look at a much larger commercial installation in the male and female showering block. We found that other contractors had previously been approached but some felt it was too big for them, others did not really grasp what the management team were looking for. The problem was that on match days, large numbers of golfers would descend […]
William Pitt the Younger’s house

The focus of our case study is a listed building in Westerham, Kent, which was once the residence of William Pitt the younger. Westerham is a small town steeped in history, and features Chartwell, home of Winston Churchill, Downe House, home to Charles Darwin, and Squerryes Court. Chevening, the deputy prime minister’s estate, is just down the road. Featuring timbers that are believed to date back to the 13th century, in more recent times William Pitts’ former house has been an upmarket restaurant, and an Indian fine dining eaterie. The present owners purchased the property in a state of dilapidation, […]
Anne of Cleves’ house gets an upgrade

Readers of this blog will know that we regularly get commissions from owners of listed properties for their heating upgrades. Today, we are in a Grade 1 listed country house in Ditchling, Sussex, UK, dating back to the 16th century, or possibly earlier. Henry VIII was believed to have bought this house for Anne of Cleves; later residents included William Pitt*. *William Pitt will also appear as a case study for our professional services shortly! In more recent times the house was owned by a radio and TV personality; our customer has recently moved in and we were engaged to provide […]
Commercial boiler Design and Installation at premier Surrey Golf Club

Tandridge Golf Club was designed by the renowned Harry Colt in 1924, and today is judged as one of the top 100 golf courses in the UK. Situated in a rural location near Oxted, in Surrey (UK), it has a thriving membership and is a beautiful course; the main club buildings date from 1928 and have been carefully retained to the present day (unfortunately the first clubhouse burnt down in 1927, exacerbated by the thatched roof). It is popular every day, with golfers seemingly happy to battle in all weathers at all times of the year, perhaps encouraged by the excellent dining […]
LPG boiler and an Evohome internet control system

We’re in a very rural part of Horsham, in Sussex, for this case study. We’re pleased to say that this is the third new boiler installation job we’ve carried out for this family in two years. Although only around 2% of our installation work features here in our case studies (because one of our boiler renewals looks much like the next, and it takes so long writing it all up), both jobs can be seen on our blog because they were unusual in different respects. We’re replacing an LPG fired (Liquid Petroleum Gas; in this case, Propane) combi boiler in […]
Complex house heating system of the future (in 1998) gets updated
For this case study, we are in Ealing, West London. Our customer rang us to say he had inadvertently bought a large house with a woefully complex heating system around 8 years ago. The first time he viewed the house, it was perfect – but they never went into the garage. On the second visit, he popped his head into the garage area, and found it completely full of commercial plant, and a ambient temperature of over 30C. Since then, many a central heating specialist has escaped having seen the garage; apparently they are brimming with confidence until the door […]
Listed building with warm air heating, new iron rads and Evohome zoning
Our customer in South London owned a Grade II listed building. It had been extended over the years but still retained many original features. Interestingly from a heating perspective, it had warm air on the ground floor, and no heating on the 1st and 2nd floors, just a couple of towel rails. The warm air was provided by a downflow Lennox open flue unit, and the hot water and towel rails by an Ideal Classic wall hung boiler. A domestic gas meter fed the building, so to limit costs and upheaval it was important that we ended up with […]
Relocating all the equipment in the cellar
Our customer, near Woolwich, in South East London, has a charming Victorian house in a quiet residential street. There is a substantial cellar that has recently been lowered and made more usable. Our brief was to find a way of moving all boiler and hot water cylinder equipment into the basement, to enable the upper floor to be remodelled, the kitchen enlarged and also a possible loft extension to take place. Ideally, the boiler would be fitted in the basement, together with a new mains pressure unvented cylinder. This presented us with a set of problems, mainly in terms of […]
