New Worcester WAVE

Worcester Bosch launched a new boiler controller in late September 2014, and the first production versions became available late last week (October 24th). Naturally, we wanted to be one of the first installers to get our hands on one, as did two of our customers.  So we managed to fit two, one in Caterham Surrey, and the other in nearby Reigate.   The Caterham job was for a forward thinking customer, who ordered his boiler system a few months ago and hearing about the impending new release, said ‘I’ll have that’.  We took out an old floorstanding Potterton Kingfisher II, […]

Large old listed country house – 155Kw boiler system renewal

We’ve just replaced the boiler plant in a very large country residence in Sussex (July 2013). The old oil fired Worcester Bosch system heated the house, which was mainly comprised of 60 yr old radiators and large bore steel pipe, as an entire single entity without any zone control.  The oil bill (no mains gas here) was £12K per annum. Our customer looked at a number of options, but liked our approach best.  Our unique proposal was to improve the efficiency of the boiler room by using weather compensation and load sharing – reduce consumption of oil and increase comfort, […]

Weather compensation on a Bosch boiler in West Norwood

Today we are in Norwood, London UK, and our customer has a lovely house, a Victorian Tardis-like property which is simply enormous when you step through the threshold. Unfortunately it had a horrid unreliable Ideal Response 120 combi boiler in the kitchen.  The previous owner unwisely sited it at a peculiar height in the corner of the kitchen, and then made maintenance difficult by building wall units in front of it.  Which made the three heat exchangers the boiler needed in the last ten years rather awkward to fit. We looked at moving the new boiler to one side, and […]

New model Vaillant in cellar replaces iron commercial

Today’s case study looks at an interesting house near Leatherhead, Surrey, UK. Outwardly, it looks like a chalet bungalow, but at the some point in the past, a massive cellar was excavated underneath with a swimming pool, games room and boiler room. This was some years ago and the present owner has no need for the swimming pool, which together with the associated boiler/plant room, was at the end of its economic life. The pool and house was heated by a large iron open flued commercial boiler with a pressure jet burner.  There was masses of wiring in the cellar […]

New Vaillant VRC470 weather compensation controller

This house in South East London has recently been bought by our customers.  Finding a few recommendations for our services on the ‘Virtual Norwood’ local community website (thanks, whoever you were!) our customers asked us to specify and quote for a modern combination boiler based replacement for an old ‘heat only’ Gloworm boiler and hot water cylinder.  They weren’t best pleased because the Gloworm boiler had thrown in the towel within hours of them moving in, and the weather is not kind in late January. Our clients wanted the most fuel efficient solution available, which meant equipping their boiler […]

Grade II listed 17th century building gets combi’d

Firstly, I must apologise the lack of photographs here.  I have a new iPhone and managed to lose a significant amount of installation photos transferring from the old one.  It was all my fault, not Apple’s! Our customer has a lovely period property near Gatwick, in Sussex.  It has a very cold kitchen and lounge, and was a conventional system with water tanks in the loft and a hot water cylinder on the 1st floor. The boiler was an old Potterton unit on the ground floor at the rear of the property. Now, these old properties are usually a bit […]

Better showers = unvented cylinder

Our customer in Purley had a boiler fitted by Hot Water & Central Heating in 2005, and was in the process of having a bathroom refitted.    Their old gravity water system cylinder was in the way of a new shower enclosure.   We worked alongside their bathroom installers (Visions) to swap over from a vented bathroom setup to a new unvented cylinder in the loft.  Our customer is a retired chemical engineer, and he specified one of the first Vaillant weather compensated heating systems when we originally installed his Vaillant ecoTEC 630 boiler in 2005. Naturally, he decided to […]

Vaillant combination boiler in loft with weather compensation

Our client owns a bungalow down a private road in Smallfield, Surrey. HWCH were asked to suggest a new gas central heating system design, to replace the existing electrical heating system. A Vaillant ecoTEC 837 fast flow combination boiler was sited in the loft; as no suitable locations existed, we constructed a frame with a fire resistant lining to support the boiler and accessories. Vaillant 837 Combination boiler mounted in the loft (work in progress) The boiler flue was passed through the pitched roof, all external works as usual were entrusted to our specialist roofing contractor. The job included 10 […]
